20 years of Interstruct

By Ryan Young

In the summer of 2001, Rich Monroe and I started our business in my living room. We were concerned about the money we were spending to buy two Dell PCs, folding tables and chairs to work on. The game plan: hustle and make it happen! We went 6+ months without a salary but were able to win a few bids to scrap together the beginning of Interstruct.

A few weeks after our start, we watched the events of 9/11 unfold before us and we hit our first slow down. I took advantage of this time to complete my Master of Architecture degree in Boston and start preparing for the exam to become a licensed architect.

The market sped up again and we went through a major growth spurt and race to 2008, only to see the construction and real estate market crumble around us. We made a group decision to cut all of our salaries so that our entire team could stay employed and weather the storm of the Great Recession. I used this time to study for the ARE and officially became a licensed architect in 2009. From there, we experienced steady annual growth that made way for an expansion in to the Tampa market in 2010 and the emergence of an office principal — and now business partner — Matt Coticchio.

We spent the next 10 years refining our process, growing our brand, adding a healthcare division and setting a standard of excellence for the clients that entrust us with their projects. Although the pandemic of 2020 was our next major hurdle, Interstruct remained a cohesive team and persevered unprecedented times to have our best year in the history of the company.

Our hard work has allowed for thoughtful real estate investment and the emergence of our own development projects using the architect-as-developer model focused on adaptive reuse + urban infill. Our loyal Clients remain our number one priority and I remain forever grateful for the opportunities entrusted to us.

As for the future, I still wake up with hustle and making-it-happen as top of mind. We are just getting started!
