Dr. Castro Private Medical Office

Interstruct recently served as general contractor on a second-floor interior fit-up for a private medical practice in Winter Park—an example of our growing portfolio supporting white-coat real estate investors.

Dr. Ivan Castro owns the building at 300 N. Pennsylvania Ave and operates his practice on the ground floor. When his upstairs tenant moved out, he saw an opportunity to expand by renovating the second floor and bringing on an additional physician to expand his medical concierge services.

With original architecture by David Crabtree, AIA, the building was completed in 2016. For this new phase, Dr. Castro and Crabtree collaborated on a design that reflects Dr. Castro’s love of mid-century modern and industrial aesthetics. They turned to Interstruct to bring that vision to life.

Though only 3,200 SF, this project focused heavily on custom finishes and was done with an open, collaborative mindset, reflecting Dr. Castro’s pride of ownership. He and nurse practitioner Lauren Shepherd remained very hands-on from design to construction, contributing great ideas throughout the process.

For specialized high-end treatments, Interstruct turned to some of the region’s top creative vendors. DH Millworks completed all of the cabinetry and solid surfaces, including the reception desk, coffee bar and jewel-box-style exam rooms, which are encased by stained maple-wood slats and stand disconnected from the ceiling. The reception desk was fabricated from steel by McGuckin’s Custom Metal Creations and is designed to patina beautifully over years of use.

The original concrete floor was sanded, stained and sealed to protect its industrial look. The staircase’s concrete treads were replaced with natural walnut treads, adding a sense of light and warmth. Per Dr. Castro’s request, the original ceiling ductwork was left semi-exposed behind acoustic baffles, allowing for strategic visibility from certain angles, including the main entryway.

The end result is an intriguingly warm and functional medical office enhanced by ample  natural light from the building’s original design, creating a calming yet modern space for his practice in the heart of Winter Park, Florida.
